Hampton Flower Court Show 2003

A TOUCH OF GLASS - WATER GARDEN - HAMPTON COURT STAND E13.

The 'TOUCH OF GLASS' Water garden at Hampton Court aims to illustrate how glass can be fully utilised within a contemporary Urban garden as the main sculptural medium. Two artists, Iestyn Davies and Gill Hobson, join forces with the award winning ' Marney Hall Design Consultancy' to present an outstanding modern setting at this year's prestigious Hampton Court Flower Show.

The contemporary courtyard theme forms a simple and minimalist back drop to the intricate glassworks, the central pool further complimenting the unique and innovative 'Fish shoal' water feature.

This impressive 1.5 metre diameter sculpture weighs nearly three quarters of a ton and has been designed for both interior and exterior environments. It became one of the most frequently used images in the BBC's coverage of this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

The sculpture was not only used as a focal point on external lighting by Diarmuid Gavin, but was also shown prominently as one of the more stimulating water features in the National press. The sculpture was created from 104 glass fish, each hand formed by Iestyn and his team at 'Blowzone' over three months. Each is unique and each has its' own precise position and orientation within the final composition. Also on display are two similarly themed wall mounted water features.

Garden designer Marney Hall is breaking away from her recognised style of planting, using very few flowers in this garden. Climatic change allows the use of a broader range of plants and the bold foliage of sub-tropical plant material features strongly within this garden's design. Marney is relying instead on Gill Hobson's specially created sculptures to add colour and vibrancy to the garden.

These unique garden artifacts, are created from an exquisite combination of kiln formed glass, hand worked stainless steel and stone. They too featured in numerous articles following the garden at 'Chelsea' since Gill's jewel-like pieces possess a richness and intricacy seldom found in contemporary sculpture; a unique fusion of light, colour and form.

The 'TOUCH OF GLASS' garden will host an exciting event on Gala night. Lighting guru David Bryant of 'Spirit Design Ltd' will be creating a magnificent display using fire, water and light within the garden.
